What Does A Sprinkler Fitter Do?
Sprinkler fitters install automatic fire sprinkler systems in new and existing buildings in all types of construction, mostly commercial, using valves, hangers, steel, and plastic pipe. They lay out, assemble, install, and maintain sprinkler systems.
- Load and unload deliveries of pipe bundles, boxes of fittings, sprinkler heads, and system components. Frequent lifting of 50-75 pounds is required.
- Overhead installation of steel or CPVC pipe, fittings, sprinkler heads, valves, and components. Frequent lifting of 10-20 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 75 pounds is required. Frequent use of ladders and/or aerial lifts is required.
- Install and service valves, devices, and trim for system risers, alarm valves, dry pipe valves, pre-action and deluge valves, backflow prevention devices, and sprinkler system alarms.
- Cut, thread, and groove pipe to specifications, using tools such as saws, cutting tools, and pipe threaders.
- Assemble and secure pipes fittings, and related equipment, according to specifications.
- Attach pipes to walls, structures, and fixtures using brackets, clamps, or hangers.
- Inspect, examine, and test installed systems and pipelines, using hydrostatic testing or other methods.
- Lay out full-scale drawings of pipe systems, supports, and related equipment, following blueprints.
- Plan pipe system layout, installation, or repair according to specifications.
- Cut and bore holes in structures, such as bulkheads, decks, and walls, prior to pipe installation using hand and power tools.

Your youth apprenticeship will transfer to our apprenticeship program, which brings you one step closer to becoming a journeyman. As a journeyman, you’ll have the opportunity to work your way up to earning more than $40 an hour.
